Back in the day, many LGBTQIA+ folks referred to one another as “friends of Dorothy,” coded language that only other community members could understand. Although its origins are contentious, the phrase is believed to come from The Wizard of Oz series. There are a lot of references to queerness in the books. In fact, in 1906’s Road to Oz, Polychrome, the rainbow’s daughter, responds to a critique about the friend group with “The queerness doesn’t matter, so long as they’re friends!” Friends of Ruby is All She Wrote Books’ version of this idea. No matter who you are or how you identify, you’re welcome to become a member. Why does All She Wrote Books have a membership program? Queer/feminist bookstores are a special kind of business. The experience you get at All She Wrote is not the same as what you’ll get at other indies in the area or a big box store. We sell books, of course, but we also serve as a neighborhood resource, public gathering space, and connect diverse communities with one another. Bookshop.org is an online platform that allows anyone to order any books they'd like while having a portion of the sale go to a bookstore of their choice. This allows you to support us even if you want a title that we don't carry. Typically, we can order a title for you even if we don't have it - but if you're in a time crunch, or you'd simply prefer to order it yourself, that is where bookshop.org comes in. It is a full-service site that will ship your books to you and handle all aspects of your order, including customer service. Then, we get a percentage. It's a win-win! I need more info. About Us Our Mission At All She Wrote Books, we think of “intersectional”, “feminist”, and “queer” as more than tokenized buzzwords. Rather, we see them as guiding lights for all who seek a safe and supportive space of people who love, respect, and care for each other. We are committed to supporting our neighbors and uplifting the voices that have been silenced for far too long. On our curated shelves, those whose stories have, for centuries, been forcibly rewritten can find themselves. We know an essential part of our work is encouraging meaningful conversations about race, gender, queerness, and more. We envision our store to be as much a gathering space as it is a place to find your next read. Donate to Gay It Forward Our Journey Founder, Christina, started All She Wrote Books in 2019 by partnering with local businesses in Somerville such as the Canopy Room at Bow Market and Winter Hill Brewing Company, asking them if she could bring her 3-shelf, beige Ikea cart of new and used books written by these authors and set herself up in a small section of their stores. In July of 2020, All She Wrote Books opened its first brick-and-mortar location at Assembly Row in Somerville. In November 2023, after being displaced from their first location, opened its doors in East Somerville on Washington Street, one of the coolest areas in the city. Who We Are Christina, Owner As a queer person and survivor of domestic abuse, Christina went digging for stories that she could relate to, and found that they were out there—but they tended to get less shelf space and be shortchanged by publishers and book reviewers. Being an avid reader, she often felt unrepresented by bookshelves and online recommendations showcasing what was already popular.

FAQ What types of books do you stock? We are a specialty queer feminist bookstore. We carry titles and authors that reflect that mission. We pride ourselves on carrying many titles that other stores don't. If you'd like to know what we do NOT stock, please review our Do-Not-Stock page. Are you accepting used books for sale or donation? Not at this time. Would you stock my book? Currently we do not accept titles on consignment. If your book is available to purchase at standard percentages without order minimums, and fits the parameters of what we carry, please fill out our Author Inquiry form . Can I host my event in the bookstore? Maybe! If you are an author, please read this page . We have an Author Event Inquiry Form that we would like you to fill out rather than emailing us, so that we can keep our inbox more manageable. If you’d like to run an event in the space, please fill out our Space Rental Form ! Our space rental pricing is variable depending on event size and timing. We also host micro weddings in the bookstore, and have specific packages for those, which can be found here . If pricing is a barrier, but you are able to organize and run the event, and believe it would be of direct benefit to the community, please don’t hesitate to reach out at info@allshewrotebooks.com . Can I browse and buy online? You sure can! You can browse our entire inventory through the Shop tab of this website's main menu. Once you click into a genre, there are also filters on the left side of the screen that you can use to narrow it down by price and additional catgeories. To search for a specific book, click 'Shop' in the main menu. On that page you'll see a search bar at the very top where you can put in the title or author you're looking for. Our site's inventory is up-to-date within 24 hours. What are your shipping options? We offer Media Mail and Priority Mail through the USPS. We can ship to the US, Canada, and Mexico. We do now also offer UPS shipping options with a basic charge of $15.00 to start if that is more secure for your address! You can select your shipping options during checkout. Please note that media mail is for books and paper items ONLY, not for our bundles and gift items. If I place an order for pick-up, will it be ready the same day? No, but if it is in stock, it will be ready shortly. Every order is handled by a human bookseller who is making sure everything is correct for you. When the item is ready for pickup you will be notified via email and phone when your order is updated and completed. What is the protocol if I order a book for pick-up? Once you’ve been notified via email that your order is ready for pickup, you can stop by the store during our normal hours. Orders are held behind the counter—let a bookseller know you’re here to pick up an order and give them your last name and order number. If you need special assistance during pickup, please just let us know in your order comments or by replying to your "pickup is ready" email or text. Can I order a book from you that you do not carry? Most of the time, yes. Your fastest option is to go to our bookshop.org page . Bookshop.org has the broadest book inventory available and handles all ordering and shipping for you, and our store will get a percentage of the sale. If you'd prefer to order directly with us, please email info@allshewrotebooks.com . I want to send a gift. Can you include a note or gift receipt? We will happily add a note to your order! You can write your message in the “order comments” section during checkout. Gift receipts are not necessary for returns or exchanges at All She Wrote Books, so we do not include them.
